It’s officially May, and that means it’s time to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month! Each May, people from around the country come together to talk about communication disorders that make it harder to speak or hear. Difficulty communicating can come between you and your loved ones, and lower your quality of life. This year’s theme is Building Connections, and we’re here to let you know how hearing aids can help you maintain the connections you value the most.

Ever since 1927, May has been celebrated as Better Hearing and Speech Month. This initiative is organized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). It’s a great time to raise awareness about communication disorders, and educate everyone about the importance of better communication. The theme for 2021 is Building Connections, and it couldn’t be more timely.

Hearing Well Matters

Hearing is one of our most important senses, but it often gets overlooked. You or a loved one may be ignoring a hearing loss. Unlike vision problems which are quickly corrected with glasses, hearing loss often goes unrecognized and untreated. However, hearing is one of the ways we build connections with our family and friends. For anyone living with untreated hearing loss, communication can be very difficult.

Hearing loss is also linked to social isolation and loneliness. After all, if you cannot hear conversations or easily chat with your loved ones, hearing loss can be a very isolating experience. People with hearing loss are more likely to withdraw from social situations and spend more time alone.

Doing the Right Thing for Your Hearing Health

  • Recognizing Hearing Loss: Hearing loss may not happen all at once. You might notice gradual changes in your hearing health, or you may not notice the changes at all. Your family could be the first ones to point out the early warning signs of hearing loss, such as turning up the volume on the TV or asking people to repeat themselves.
  • Getting a Hearing Test: The first step in looking after your hearing health and building strong connections is to get a hearing test. During a hearing test, we’ll assess your hearing levels, discover your hearing threshold, and find out what sounds you’re missing. Then, we’ll help you determine what treatment options can help you hear.
  • Treating Hearing Loss: When you decide to treat your hearing loss, you’ll be able to reconnect with the people you care about. But that’s not all. Hearing aids also improve your overall quality of life by helping you feel more confident in social settings, keeping you more physically active, reducing cognitive decline, and even lowering your risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Hearing Devices that Match Your Lifestyle

Hearing aids are one of the best treatment options for hearing loss. Modern hearing devices can do some incredible things, and we’ll help you find the perfect pair.

We’ll start by asking you a few questions about your lifestyle. Your lifestyle helps us make the best hearing aid recommendations for you, whether you’re physically active, very social, or need help hearing quiet conversations.

Some hearing aids feature advanced technology that analyzes your environment and automatically switches between programs and settings. Other devices have connectivity features so you can wirelessly stream audio straight to your phone. There are many more programs and settings to choose from, such as background noise suppression, music listening programs, speech enhancement, or even rechargeable batteries. You can find hearing aids that match your lifestyle and can help you build better connections with your family and friends.

Tailoring Your Hearing Aids to Your Hearing Needs

Once you’ve chosen the right hearing aids, we’ll make sure they perfectly match your hearing needs. We’ll calibrate the devices, so they perfectly match your level of hearing loss, and help you fill in any gaps in the conversation. You’ll be able to build strong connections without worrying about your hearing.
